Short Bio: Doug was an avid, amateur magician (long before his interest in mathematics) specializing in embarrassing children’s shows. Some time later he completed a PhD in mathematics from Carnegie Mellon, specializing in logic, and he started working as a mathematics professor at Shippensburg University in south central Pennsylvania. For ten summers Doug taught a discrete math course for the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences, the content of which became the basis of a textbook that motivates traditional topics using patterns, puzzles, games, and, of course, magic tricks.
